Swami Sivananda Saraswasti was born on September 8, 1887 in Tamil Nadu, South India.
His actual name is Kuppuswami.
He was a medical doctor and served the poor Indian migrant workers in the rubber estates in Malaya (now known as Peninsula Malaysia) for many years.
Personally, he felt that medicine could not treat all the ills of humanity.
Eventually he gave up his medical career and took to a life of renunciation.
He returned to India and spent a year wandering before settling in Rishikesh, Himalayas.
It was there, he practiced intense austerities. At the same time he found his guru, Swami Vishwananda, and was initiated into sannyas (monkhood).
It was here Kuppuswami, the guru gave him his monastic name, Swami Sivananda Saraswati.
Initially Swami Sivananda spent many years in meditation.
At the same time, he still served the sick in a small medical clinic, which he established.
Besides, conducting sankirtan (chanting), Swami Sivanda Saraswati gave lectures and taught people how to keep strong and healthy by practicing yoga asanas (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), and kriyas (cleansing exercises).
This Hindu guru exhorted his audience to strive for spiritual development.
In 1932, he started the Sivananda Ashram and in 1936 he founded Divine Life Society in Rishikesh.
He spread his teaching through the works of his disciples and his own 200-300 books in English; showing the methods and techniques of the Divine Life and Self Realization.
Swami Sivananda’s teachings are the inspiration behind the teachings of the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers.
