Sri Swami Sivananda Saraswati actual name is Kuppuswami.

In fact, he was a trained physician who turned spiritual guru.

This Hindu spiritual teacher, an author of more than 200 books on Yoga and Vedanta.

He is also the founder of The Divine Life Society.

In 1913, Dr. Kuppuswami went to Malaya (now known as Peninsula Malaysia) to serve the poor Indian migrants working on the rubber plantations.

As a doctor, Kuppuswami knew that he could only study anatomy, but not the Atman (Soul).

From there, he took interests in religion.

Dr. Kuppuswami sought the company of Sannyasins (someone who has reached the life stage of sannyasa, or “renouncement of material possession) and Sadhus and began to study religious books.

In 1923, at the age of 36, he left Malaya and returned to India to pursue a spiritual quest.

Back in India, he met his guru, Vishwananda Saraswati.

It was Vishwananda who initiated him into the Sannyasa order, and gave him his monastic name, Swami Sivananda Saraswati.

Even after Sivananda Saraswati was deep into spiritual practices, he still continued his medical nursing.

In 1936, he founded Divine Life Society in Rishikesh.

Sivananda Saraswati passed away on July 14, 1963.

Many of his disciples went on to start new organizations.

Sri Swami Sivananda Saraswati did not have to deliver long sermons, yet his students, devotees and admirers flocked to listen to him from everywhere.
