The Meaning Of Always Do Right; This Will Gratify Some People And Astonish The Rest

Meaning Of Always Do Right Quote

What does the quote “Always do right; this will gratify some people and astonish the rest” by Mark Twain means?

This quote  which was actually a note to the Young People’s Society, Greenpoint Presbyterian Church, written on February 16, 1901.

(source of the note is found here.)

It is rather a sarcastic advice, that whatever it is, the best thing in life is we should always choose to do the right thing.

the meaning of always do rightIn society, generally there are two kinds of people. The one who believes we should be doing the right thing, as expected.

Then the other group who by nature, choose to be so-called different or daring; by doing the wrong thing. They could be critical or ridicule at your predictable or expected action.

Definitely, our proper action will pleased the the first group of people. But then, the second group of people could be surprised by your goody-goody action.

It is because you dare to stick to your belief and principle (doing the right thing) at the risk of being mocked at by them.
