That’s what Albert Einstein, the late German-born theoretical physicist said in his commencement address in Swarthmore College back on June 6, 1938.
That quotation is from his essay, titled “Morals and Emotions” found in Einstein’s book “Out of My Later Years“.
In the essay, Albert Einstein said it is from what we experience with and from within ourselves.
All our conscious acts come from our desires and our fears.
As human, we are all alike. We will try to escape pain and death, while we look for what is pleasant and pleasurable.

It is our impulses that ruled us in all what we do. According to Albert Einstein, these impulses are so organized that our actions in general serve for our self-preservation and and that of the race.
In addition, it is our hunger, love, pain, fear are some of those inner forces which rule our individual’s instinct for self-preservation.
We humans are social beings. As a result, we are moved in the relations with our fellow beings by such feelings as sympathy, pride, hate, need for power, pity, and so on.
It is all these impulses, that get us into actions.
All these actions would cease, if all those powerful elemental forces were to stop stirring within us.
In fact, we are not much different from animals. Our primary instincts are much alike in them.
Einstein said that the most obvious difference is that we humans have a relatively strong power of imagination.
We have the capacity to think, together with the aid of our language and other symbolical devices.
